Are you a little nervous down there? No one is bragging about the year that the Cubs are having. Just remember that it ain't over till it's over ... Oh! ... that's right, I forgot YOU have to brag while YOUR team is still in first place. That's why Jonathan must have posted a picture of when the Cubs were in first place. I can think of a lot of examples of teams that are heavily favored that choke down the stretch or into the play offs, like in 69 & 84, just as recently as the 03 NLCS ... Oh wait, those years the Cubs choked! Well, hopefully one of these days water will find its level, then watch out! It will have to be something like 30 World Championships in a row for this Chicago National League Ballclub!
Cub fans change so much. Almost every cub fan I know loved Sammy Sosa up until last year, and then all of a sudden everyone say's he's terrible, and were so happy when they got rid of him. Luke used to be a cubs fan. But when he gave up all hope (a wise man) he became a white sox fan. ....But I think he became a cubs fan again in 03. Correct me if I'm wrong Luke.
Whoever said that thing about choking I full heartedly agree. A couple years back, I think it was in 2003. The Marlins verse the...who was it? Oh yeah that's right, would you know it, it was the cubs. I think they were up 3-1 and all of a sudden it was the marlins up 4-3. To bad.
Yeah, I have to agree about this choking thing. Friends, wasn't it back in 04 when there was this team that had like 105 wins and they almost lost the NLCS to a team that had never won a playoff series until that year, but they did pull it out game 7. And then they were in the WS vs. the AL wild card team. Yes, friends, not only was it the wild card team, but it was a cursed wild card team! And they CHOKED! They didn't even win one game! Sorry, friend, your team has the biggest most recent choke.
Somehow I have this sneaking suspicion that this conversation isn't going to go anywhere. Let's face it. If the Cubs and Cardinals were to change places in the standings that wouldn't change us any. The Cardinal fans would be less happy, but they'd still be Cardinal fans. And, obviously, the Chicago Cubs would still be the most popular team in baseball and we'd still be their faithful fans. See, it really has nothing to do with whether they are winning or losing.
And, my dad was a White Sox fan for a short while when he was kid (peer influence)... until his grandpa found out and gave him a talking to. He's been faithful ever since! It's just in our blood, folks. We can't help it - even if we wanted to.
Oh, and on Sammy Sosa. First off, it's not true that all Cubs fans loved him. Secondly, it only makes sense to love the guys that help the team you love. When they cease to do that - and actually are injury to the team - then we no longer have any call to love them. Because we're fans of the TEAM.
And, finally, on cursed baseball teams. Look up Proverbs 26:2. In light of that I refuse to believe that the Cubs are cursed. Not sure what the reasons were for the Red Sox curse, but it may apply to them as well.
As to curses, if the Cubs aren't cursed we can certainly say that God's favor does not appear to shine upon them.
Second, I would expect Cub fans to say that it isn't about winning or losing. This is the self-defeatism that we have all come to expect from those who cheer for a team that finds it difficult to maintain any consistency to stay in the "W" column.
Third, I am unsure as to your statement saying the Cubs are the most popular team unless we take into account that Americans are prone to cheer for the underdog.
With all this being said, the Huber family is seeking to plan a celebration in 2008 to commemorate 100 years of futility in the Cub Nation. I hesitate to get the word out this soon, but I believe we can anticipate that the losing will continue. After all, you only have to say, "Wait till next year" a couple more times. This would be a festive time full of joy and no heartache. We would attempt to replace the agony of defeat with the thrill of victory even if it comes by way of a volleyball game or a game of Dutch Blitz or four on a couch. Those of us who experience winning more often would seek to show great sympathy. I can't guarantee that we would role over and die in order for the Cub fans to experience the thrill of victory since winning is in our blood but we would give it a try. Oh by the way, isn't this what happened in 2003 in the National League Central division. (Everyone roling over and dying so the Cubs could win with 90 wins or some number like that?) Oh the bunny trails are endless.
LOL! Yes, the bunny trails are endless, and I'm afraid so is this conversation. Sigh.
Oh, all right.
"...we can certainly say that God's favor does not appear to shine upon them...This is self-defeatism..." Dear friends, please tell me. Do you wear blue or gray? And for whom did you vote in the recent election? Come now. Be consistent. Just because one loses doesn't mean one is wrong. "A land without ruins is a land without memories, a land without memories is a land without history...." Christian and American history are filled with loses - some greater and more persistent than others.
So, this argument just can't really apply. Victory does not inherently imply greatness.
"Self-defeatism we have all come to expect from those who cheer for a team that finds it difficult to maintain any consistency to stay in the "W" column." Second bad argument. If the Cardinals fall apart between seasons and have a record under 400 next year will you cease to be fans? Are you merely fans because they've had a few good years in a row? Fair weather friends?
"Third, I am unsure as to your statement saying the Cubs are the most popular team unless we take into account that Americans are prone to cheer for the underdog." Aw. You're just jealous. Hey, the stats back up our statement.
"...plan a celebration in 2008 to commemorate 100 years..." Hey, we get to celebrate sooner than that. We're planning on attending Wrigley in 2007 in vintage garb. :-) And if they lose. We'll just say... Umm, yeah. Next year.
"After all, you only have to say, "Wait till next year" a couple more times." Hmm. If they were to win it all - what would we do? Chicago police wouldn't have to worry about riotous celebrations, though. Everyone would walk out of the stadium absolutely dumb with disbelief.
"replace the agony of defeat with the thrill of victory" We've learned what it means to be good sports. Don't worry. Well, maybe!
"Oh by the way, isn't this what happened in 2003 in the National League Central division..." Seems to me the Cardinals were one of those teams that rolled over and died in 2003... and say, didn't they roll over and die last year to let some team that only had 90-something wins get the rings?
Hey Huber Guys, What would you do to celebrate if the whole world suddenly turned into cardinals fans. Hmmm I wonder. And I also wonder where you would hide if the Cubs do win the World Series. Hmmmm I wonder.....

Well got to go.... drink more Cubs Cool Aid.
A Faithful Cub Fan.
Hey um, are'nt you forgetting about the 04 season?
P.S. The cubs are cursed, they'll never win a championship in there life
Were the Bo-Sox cursed, when they swept your Cards in the Would Series?
There cursed? Hmm. Sounds more like your keyboard is cursed.
Fine, World Series, but the Cards still lost to a "cursed team."
Who say's the Red Sox are cursed?

I did like the White Sox for a while, but that was way before the 03 season. Brandon would you still tease us if we were "BREWERS FANS."
