Boy, it's about time for an update here! Last week after the NYS LEAH Convention, the ResoundingVoice Crew headed down to Alabama to help out with the last few days of Justice Parker's campaign for the seat of Supreme Court Chief Justice. The campaign work was a lot of fun, and it was great to be working for someone who is so firmly based on the truth. Here are some pictures from the trip.

This picture is of Josh's suburban next to an almost identical one before we left New York. It even had the same kind of bug shield!

Fortunately, we were able to stop at the Back's house in Ohio and drop off the trailer, so that we didn't have to pull it all the way down to AL. This was a HUGE blessing!

On the way down to Montgomery we stopped in Birmingham to pick up some tabloids for the campaign. Here's a picture from the front seat facing back. Yes, Ethan is sitting on everyone's lap, between them and the tabloids (the back bench is very small).

Monday morning Aaron Englund, Luke VonHolten and I headed out to distribute tabloids. We were given the area from Prattville, AL north along Rt. 31 (Aaron and Luke will testify that I now know Rt. 31 very well).

On the way out we saw this! Wow! I had to look around to make sure that I hadn't gone back in time!

On the day of the election, Ethan Webb got to work the phones.

The election day was also Ethan's birthday! We had ice cream (which was slightly melted) for him.

On the last night we all got blank green t-shirts (leftover from a campaign event) that everyone signed. Thanks to Aaron Englund, certain ones of us will be getting rub-a-dub markers so that the ink doesn't wash out of the shirts.

Well here I am blogging from the Super 8 in Syracuse, NY.
Joshua, Joseph and I made the trip out here today with Aaron England, Ethan Webb, and Luke VonHolten. Here are some pictures from the trip out.

We left home today at about 3:00am. Here's a picture of everyone in the back of the Suburban just after we left home.

What could I be getting from DHL? Hmm...

Wow! All for me?

Earlier this week, I received a 860 page invoice from DHL for $121,011.72! Fortunately there was already a $93,327.07 deduction, so the net amount due was only $26,889.71. But still, I wanted to know what I shipped that cost so much! So, I started to look over the invoice.

Well, that's not quite how it went, but before I explain what did happen, let me give a little background.

At the beginning of April I sold a gas powered R/C Airplane with a 50" wingspan on eBay. Because it was so large, and also because airplanes are delicate toys, I had to ship it in a VERY LARGE box with lots of padding. The box was one of those U-Haul wardrobe boxes, about four and a half feet tall, and about three feet side to side. After the auction was over I contacted UPS about shipping, only to find out that it would cost me about $110 to ship! So I contacted FedEx, which was about $75. Still not happy, I contacted DHL. They only charged $17, so I decided to ship with them (OBVIOUSLY). Anyway, I never received an invoice (which is how I thought I was set-up to be billed), so I finally called DHL last week and asked for the invoice to be "re"-sent.

So it was with this history in mind that I opened the invoice this week. As you can imagine, I thought someone had either hi-jacked my account, or else there was some major mix-up with DHL. So I grabbed the phone and called DHL. They asked for the invoice number, so I gave it to them. The next thing I heard was "Oh, you shouldn't have gotten that!" I said: "So I don't have to pay any of this?" They said, "No you don't" (It was like pulling teeth to get any info from them). I asked "So, what is this?" They said, "You got the complete records of all the people that shipped like you did, over the internet". So (still wanting to make sure I was getting it straight) I asked, "So, I wasn't supposed to get this?" They said, "No, the bill-to address says 'Do Not Use, 515 W G----- Rd, etc...". I asked "So what should I do with this?" They said "Oh, you can just discard it".

I was ok with that, certainly a lot more ok than paying the $26,889.71, but I wonder how much UPS would pay for these records. :) I bet DHL was thinking PLEASE DISCARD THAT!

As many of you know, our neighbor across the street from us (Jacob Bernhardt) is a very fine pianist. Over the past year he has started taking lessons from Amilio Del Rosario. This Monday I received a phone call from my piano teacher (Mrs. Bendorf) asking if I would be interested in sitting in on one of Jacob's lessons! Of course I was thrilled with the opportunity, both for the purpose of what I might be able to learn in my own piano playing, and also for what I could glean from a teaching stand-point. So last Thursday I spent the afternoon in Winnetka, IL sitting in on the lesson. It was great! I was especially happy that they were working on one of Chopin's sonatas! I was able to glean some pretty neat stuff about interpreting Chopin (my favorite composer for piano).

Last night our family went over to MilkyWay Park where we got together with some families for a game of baseball. The first game went well. The teams were very even, and at first I thought we were going to lose, but then we rearranged our field positions and we ended up winning 13 to 8! The second game was Fathers and Daughters vs. Sons. The sons won 6 to 4. Here are some pictures from the evening.

5-19 Update

"Update", what a boring title for a blog post! Aren't all blog posts updates? Oh well...

The past week since the McDonald family left, has been a busy one. Although it hasn't been busy enough to have us five places at once, it has kept us moving from one thing to the next without much in between. Here's a quick overview of some of the "blog worthy" items.

First (and even before the McDonalds left) was a Scholarship Audition at Rock Valley College on Tuesday, May 9th. I missed the official registration deadline (I had the wrong dates) but when I did call Rock Valley College, they were still able to squeeze me in! So, on Monday the audition time was confirmed, and on Tuesday I got to perform. Fortunately I had a full 15-piece program already prepared for the National Piano-Playing Guild Auditions, so I didn't have any problem finding music for the Scholarship Audition. The audition went well, and the judges appeared to be pleased. The choir director was there, so he did some voice exercises with me to see if the choir would be something I could join as well as accompany on the piano for some pieces. The results have not been announced yet, so I'm not sure what the result will be.

On the evening of Saturday the 13th, Joanna, Joshua and I went to an Opera (La Bohéme) that I was given tickets to for my birthday. It was at the Coronado Theater in Rockford. I didn't know what going to an opera would be like, but I am pleased to say that it was great! The Coronado Theater was beautiful, and the music was gorgeous. I certainly hope to go again. Here are a few pictures of the theater.

On Monday the 15th, I finished up a small engine job that I was doing on a tractor. The tractor was a 1983 Cub Cadet 582 Special (by International Harvester). Being as old as it was, it was built like a tank, and was very cool. I enjoyed working on it, and I was also very glad that we could use it to mow most of our lawn before the owner picked it up. Here is a picture of Josiah riding it around the yard at Jeremy's house (we mowed his lawn with it also).

Yesterday, May 18th was the National Piano-Playing Guild Audition that I mentioned earlier. It was held at McHenry County College. This year's program was much bigger for me than normal (15 pieces) because I was going for the High School Diploma that the Guild offers if you complete this program. The piano wasn't anything incredible, but my performance for the judge went very well. There were a few glitches, but somehow you'd hardly guess it by looking at the judge's comments. Praise the Lord!

Last (actually first chronologically) but not least, was the 1st anniversary of the purchase of my beautiful Kawai Grand Piano on May 7th 2005. I praise the Lord for providing this excellent piano, within my price range, and at such a perfect time. I don't think I could have accomplished much of what I did this year, if I didn't have it. Here are a few pictures from when we picked it up.

Ok, I've been told by a few friends that this is illegal, but I'm going to do it anyway.

It's the dreadful thing of linking to another blog about an event! I apologize, but I wrote the post on the other blog anyway, so maybe that helps.

The Truck I Want So Bad...

Today I was going through pictures on our computer, and I came across some pictures from a lawn maintenance job that I did a few years ago, which involved a truck that I would really like to have.

Here is a picture of the hedge that we had to trim from about 9'-10' tall, down to 3 1/2' tall. Needless to say, there was an immense amount of branches left in one huge/long pile, running the entire length of the hedge. Luke VonHolten and I were trimming branches, while Joseph hauled them in the trailer of the lawn tractor. As the end of the afternoon was approaching, I told Joseph to stop hauling, and help trim, so that we could make sure that we at least got all of the bushes trimmed by dark. Well, we got the hedge trimmed, and it was just barely getting dark, so we went back to the tractor, to start hauling... It wouldn't start... Bummer!

I asked the owner of the place if we could use his blue truck to haul the branches. He said we could, but he didn't know if it'd start or not because he hadn't used it in a long time.

I went out to the truck and started cranking the engine. I cranked... And I cranked... Until all of a sudden it started to fire intermittently. This is when I realized how much fun this truck was going to be to drive! When it finally got to the point that it could stay running on it's own, I had to keep the gas pedal all the way to the floor so that it wouldn't die. Amidst the noisy rumble of the engine, and the great clouds of smoke being emitted from the back of the truck, Luke VonHolten and Joseph looked on with some of the biggest grins I've ever seen. It reminded me of a scene from the movie "The Flight of the Phoenix". Eventually I was able to take my foot off the gas pedal, and it had a beautiful sounding idle. I put it in gear and it died. For some reason Luke and Joseph found this hilarious. Grateful that I wasn't limited to five cartridges, I started it back up and helped it out a little with some throttle. To make a long story short, we started hauling branches in the back of the pickup, but it wasn't all to fast so Luke suggested the plow. At first I said no, but then I decided we'd give it a try. By now it was dark and we were working by the light of the headlights. There was one problem here, when we started using the plow it blocked the headlights so I couldn't see where I was going. So Luke climbed on the top of the cab to give me directions. It worked beautifully. With Luke on top shouting directions, the pile soon started rolling up like a big snowball, and before long we were pushing a huge-dense roll of branches (possibly twice the height of the truck) towards the fire pit.

I don't think I've ever cleaned up so many bushes so fast, or had so much fun doing it.

Albuquerque NM Trip Down

Well, here I am blogging from the back of the suburban just outside of Albuquerque, NM, while listening to the fourth CD of Michael Gerber's six CD set called "The Emyth Seminar - Taking Charge of Your Business and Your Life". Definitely a good set to listen to if you're running (or considering starting) a business.

After this Michael Gerber CD is done, I'm going to be interviewing the members of the Resounding Voice Crew that are on this trip. In the mean time, here's some info, and a few pictures from the trip down.

The weather outside is PERFECT! Yesterday it was around 85 degrees! But that's OK with me because we were in the air conditioning all day yesterday, and last night it got down to 33 degrees. It is currently 55 degrees, very dry, with a blazing hot sun. BEAUTIFUL!

We saw numerous accidents on the way down, including one where a pick-up with trailer spun around, rolled over, and went on it's side into the trees down a ditch much like the one in this picture. This picture is of an accident where the trailer apparently came off the hitch.

The first interview that Jonathan Erber's Blog will hold, will be with the CEO of Resounding Voice, Joshua Erber.

J.E.B: Joshua, of all the conferences that you do each year, which of them is your favorite?

Joshua Erber: The New Mexico conference is my favorite.

J.E.B: Why is that?

Joshua Erber: Probably due to the more relaxed atmosphere.

J.E.B: What do you think is the cause for the relaxed atmosphere?

Joshua Erber: There's just something easy about it. Things seem to run smoother, and go better at this conference from a technical perspective. In New Mexico we use our own mic's, while in other places we have to patch into their sound systems, which isn't so easy.

J.E.B. When you go to conferences, what are your favorite places to stay?

Joshua Erber: My favorite places to stay are the Embassy Suites in NY, or the Drury Inn in Albuquerque NM.

J.E.B: If there were any conferences that you could get that you don't have already, which would they be?

Joshua Erber: All existing conferences.

J.E.B: Well, good luck to you and your business, we hope the rest of your trip goes well. Thanks again for your time!

Ethan Webb: I've heard it said that the shorter people are the most athletic.

J.E.B: How do you feel that will enhance your performance at the conference?

Ethan Webb: Maneuvering through crowds should be easier since I'm smaller, and it's also nice to be short because I can dodge the angry ladies easier. LOL.

J.E.B: Have things turned out to be how you expected them?

Ethan Webb: Over-all, yes.

J.E.B: Is that good or bad?

Ethan Webb: Good.

J.E.B. What were your impressions of the Hotel in Tucumcari?

Ethan Webb: It was just like any other hotel that I've been in, except for the guy at the counter.

J.E.B: What was different about him?

Ethan Webb: He was different by being more talkative and friendly. And he was smaller.

J.E.B: Well thank you for your time, who would you like us to interview next?

Ethan Webb: The one sitting next to me: Aaron Englund.

J.E.B: Aaron, how many conferences have you done with Resounding Voice?

Aaron Englund: I've done four.

Aaron Englund: I like the sparsely located Cattle, and the Barren Landscape.

Aaron Englund: The good beer and great fun. LOL. No, seriously, at time it can be really fast paced and I like dealing with the people, and all the funny jokes and stuff that happens.

J.E.B: What's your favorite Resounding Voice moment?

Aaron Englund: I'm not sure. Probably escorting the vonTrapp singers through the crowd in Illinois, the crowd control, and all that was apart of that concert.

J.E.B: What's the funniest thing that's ever happened to you while working with Resounding Voice?

Aaron Englund: I don't know, probably when a lady said that I was well groomed.

J.E.B: What did you say in a situation like that?

Aaron Englund: I thought she had good vision to see past the ragged beard to my heart. LOL! No, I really can't remember what I said.

J.E.B: Well it's been great talking with you, hope you have a great day, who would you like us to interview next?

Aaron Englund: Joseph Erber

J.E.B. Joseph, how long have you been working with Resounding Voice?

Joseph Erber: I've been a part of the crew for four years.

J.E.B: Do you enjoy working with Resounding Voice?

Joseph Erber: Yes, very much so.

J.E.B: What's your favorite task at conferences?

Joseph Erber: Sitting around when there's nothing to do! LOL. I'd say cash register is probably my favorite job.

J.E.B: Why enjoy the cash register so much?

Joseph Erber: Because you don't have to run around everywhere, and it's easy, with no pressure.

J.E.B: In light of everything that you do with resounding voice, even outside of the conferences. What do you enjoy the most?

Joseph Erber: Eating Pizza after the conference.

J.E.B: Out of all the conferences in the year, which are your favorite?

Joseph Erber: I enjoy the Grazing Conference in Wisconsin, and probably my next favorite would be either NM, AZ, or NY, or ... Well I like them all.

J.E.B: What was your worse Resounding Voice moment?

Joseph Erber: Let me think. Probably working with cranky customers.

J.E.B: Well, I hope you enjoy the rest of the NM trip. Thank you for you taking the time to answer our questions. Who would you like us to interview next.

Joseph Erber: Dad.

J.E.B: Dad, do you enjoy being a chaperon for this group of guys, or is it really stressful?

Dad: It has it's moments. Generally it's a good group to be with.

J.E.B: What is your favorite conference that you've ever done working with Resounding Voice?

Dad: Probably New Mexico!

J.E.B: Why is that?

Dad: Well when you're going through the mountains and your ears clear, it's very satisfying. LOL. No, it's a nice trip, the surroundings are very unique, and the conference is very well organized, and runs well.

J.E.B: What is your favorite job at the conference?

Dad: Unfortunately, I like duplicating the tapes.

J.E.B: Why Unfortunately?

Dad: Well, tapes are on the out.

J.E.B: When tapes are eliminated, what job do you hope to get?

Dad: Manning the phones at home.

J.E.B: What is your favorite part of the trips?

Dad: The celebration dinner afterwards.

J.E.B: If there were any conferences in places that we haven't gone yet, where would you want to go?

Dad: Colorado.

J.E.B: Why is that?

Dad: In expectation that all the previous mentioned items that I enjoy would be duplicated there.

J.E.B: Thank you for time, I hope that this wasn't one of those stressful moments that you mentioned before.

Dad: Borderline... Thank you.

Now let's go to Luke Von Holten who is sitting in the back seat with me as we speak.

J.E.B: Luke, How many years have you been with Resounding Voice?

Luke Von Holten: This would be my third year.

J.E.B: What was your first conference with Resounding Voice?

Luke Von Holten: The Wisconsin Grazing Conference.

J.E.B: What was your first impression with Resounding Voice at that conference.

Luke Von Holten: Well, the first guy that I talked to asked if we were Mormon.

J.E.B: Really! Why did he think that?

Luke Von Holten: Well, I guess Mormons wear white shirts with black bowties. We were wearing white shirts with Burgundy bowties, so I guess that's why.

J.E.B: Well, you obviously stayed with Resounding Voice when they asked you on their next conference, so did things get better after that?

Luke Von Holten: Things were pretty good until the '05 New Mexico conference when things went down hill again.

J.E.B: What happened?

Luke Von Holten: Well, the I went up on stage to give a speaker his mic, and as I handed it to him he threw his arm around me and said "Look At This Guy! He wears a bowtie!". He then went on to say how professional it looked, and then after I walked off stage he yelled "Hey, get that guy, he stole my wallet!". One guy in the crowd even jumped out of his seat after me. Then he said: Never pay attention to the man behind the curtain, he laughed, and then started the session.

J.E.B: Wow! That's crazy. Do most conferences have crazy things like that happen?

Luke Von Holten: No, those are the only two that have been substantially crazy.

J.E.B: Well, we'll hope that nothing like that happens this year. Thanks you all for your time!

In case you couldn't tell, I've been cleaning up my computer lately, and consequently I have been coming across a lot of pictures, hence the saturation of my blog with Random Photos.

For those who might not like the look of things in this picture:

In this picture picture, the activity that we are engaged in isn't as dangerous as it looks (although it was a little scary for .1 seconds). I had my foot on the gas (comforting huh!), and I was the one who told the young man on my lap to take it up the hill, (knowing it'd be a blast :-).

For the sake of those who still don't like the look of things:

It is almost impossible to roll this go-kart unless you are going full speed on dry pavement, and then slam the steering wheel all the way to the left (or right).

Hey Brenton, let me know when you'll be coming up again, and I'll see if I can find another go-kart for us to mess around on. :)

Help! I'm new to Linux!

Hey guys!

I've been experimenting a little with Knoppix (live CD), and I'm to the point where I'm ready for more.

I want to install something that can run directly from my Harddrive rather than the CD, but everywhere that I go to download the ISO installation CD images, the server doesn't respond!

Does anybody know of a good place to download a good version of Linux? Thanks!
